Purge Your Closet

It's a new year, time to get down to business

Every New Year I go through this weird little ritual. I gaze into my closet and wonder how it got so packed with clothes. Then I also come to the realization that I wear only two thirds of them. This is when I begin the ritual of trying to get some of those worn out, tired looking or just plan ugly clothes out of my closet. If you’re anything like me this is a hard thing to do. I hate the idea of getting rid of any of my clothes or shoes, even the ones I don’t wear anymore. What if I need them at some future date?

I have a little trick that has been working for me for years in purging my closet. I take the items that I don’t love so much or have gotten too worn out to wear for anything but painting a room and put them in a bag. I then transfer the bag to the garage. Yes, I know this doesn’t accomplish what we were intending, getting rid of things. But it does reduce the number of clothes in my closet. I keep the bag in my garage for a couple of months and then go back to it. If I still find the clothes distasteful I then load the bag into my trunk and take it to Goodwill.

This is what it should look like

This little ritual gives me an out. I don’t have to actually get rid of the clothes on the same day I take them out of the closet. It gives me a little time to think over my disposal choice. If I go back to the bag in the garage I usually find that I lived without wearing or thinking about this item for two or more months so why keep it? If you don’t miss it don’t let it clutter up your closet and your life. When you come to the realization that you don’t want this bag of clothes it’s the perfect time to get rid of it.

Since its New Year’s Eve we will all be thinking about things that clutter up our lives and changes that we want to make. It’s the start of a new calendar year and a fresh start so why not make the best of it? Go through your closet and find those core pieces to keep and those weird choices to throw out. You might even find an awesome party dress to wear tonight or some beautiful accessories you forgot about. Just remember that cleaning your closet doesn’t have to be painful. Besides it will make room for any new purchases you make this coming year.
I can always dream...

  1. On new year’s day, we began 2013 by talking about cleaning out your closet as a way of blessing somebody else who might be in much more need of those jeans than you. But if you’re like me simplifying and cleaning your closet isn’t an easy fete. In fact you might dread it although i admit i love to do it
