The celebration before Lent has always featured wonderful food, parties and over imbibing. I recently attended a potluck featuring Mardi Gras food and drinks and I can say this is true. It was also a lot of fun. Who doesn’t love a good potluck dinner? Fabulous food and you didn’t have to cook the entire meal. Another aspect of Mardi Gras is the beads. I found out that the colors of the beads are symbolic and each one of the colors is representative of a particular characteristic. The color purple is symbolic of justice, the gold represents power and green represents faith. There is also a rumor that the colors of the beads are just pretty, I have to agree with that one.
I love these colors in jewelry. Amethysts for the purple, Citrine for the gold and Emerald or Imperial Diopside for the green all make beautiful statements in gemstones. Gemstone jewelry is just pretty, no matter how you slice it. While I’m not sure that wearing all three of these colors at the same time with different pieces would work, you might have to explain yourself, it would certainly be colorful. It’s probably better to wear a single piece that features multiple gemstones in different colors. I have a pure silver gemstone bracelet that has several different gemstones all around. I’m sure it can be made to work with the Mardi Gras colors if desired, custom jewelry.
That is the wonderful thing about gemstone jewelry; the rainbow of colors can fit any mood or occasion. You don’t have to wait for Mardi Gras to indulge, it’s something you can have fun with every day. This is probably why the throwing beads tradition is so popular in New Orleans. Jewelry is fun and lifts your spirits, even if it's costume jewelry. At the Mardi Gras celebration, beads are thrown from floats. While most of the beads are quite inexpensive, some New Orleans “Krewes” have special addition beads and toys that are thrown to the public. Talk about custom jewelry and limited additions! I’m sure there is a lot of competition for these special beads.
So for all those who can’t travel to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras, go through your jewelry boxes and look for gemstones that reflect the colors of this traditional celebration. If you can’t find jewelry that fits these color motifs, try clothing. A beautiful purple sweater and a gold scarf are always fashionable. It will lift your spirits, inject a little color into your wardrobe and make you feel like you’re celebrating too. Not everyone can travel the world, but through jewelry we can experience creations, colors and cultures from other fascinating places.
