Beautiful Blue Cat's Eye Crystal Doublet with White Sapphire by Gabrielle Bruni Creations
It’s fascinating when you read an article about a jewelry company, it’s even more fascinating when it’s one of the world’s largest jewelers and you’ve never heard of them. I will be the first to admit that I’m bad with names so I may have heard of them but forgot the name. The interesting part about this particular jewelry company is their location, Hong Kong. While many people here in the US know Tiffany and Company or Cartier, few know about Chow Tai Fook. The only reason I am bringing this up is the company is launching its IPO and it was announced in the Wall Street Journal. I was interested in the back story and was surprised by the size of a relatively unknown company to western consumers.
The article states that Chow Tai Fook is an 80 year old company that began in Macau which was a Portuguese colony and then expanded to Hong Kong. This is the same route my mother’s family took years ago when she was a young girl. I heard tales while I was growing up about how they left Macau when she was around ten and moved to Hong Kong. My Mother, Uncle and Grandmother moved to California after a few years in Hong Kong. The entire family eventually immigrated to the US sometime after my parents got married. My father was in the US Navy at the time and they met at the USO in San Francisco, I swear I’m not making this up.

The part of the article that I was drawn to would be the information about where they began and where they went, since the company is so large, it was kind of obvious where they would end up. It is also interesting that this huge jewelry company is almost completely unknown to consumers in the US. This in itself is not that surprising, most American consumers do not know about Chow Tai Fook because they simply do not have a store in the US. If there was a presence it would be known just as everyone knows which large jewelry stores are located at their local mall or shopping center. Size may not necessarily be the deciding factor in brand presence; it could be something as simple as frequency of viewing or notoriety. Many of the well known jewelry companies in the US became well know because they developed a reputation for quality, service and the uniqueness of their product. Hallmarks of all high end jewelry stores, and while their designs captivate they remain distinctive, but size is not always the defining factor in quality designs.
Being a designer who is unknown does not mean your designs are not creative, it just means fewer consumers are aware of them. This can be true of many jewelry designs and the designer themselves are almost completely anonymous. I know that I carry some beautiful designs by designers whose names are not household words. They make really nice pieces that are not only quality but attractive to wear. I know this is true because I have several pieces from these designers that I wear on a regular basis that never fail to get compliments. So it is quite possible that there are wonderful jewelry companies and designers out there that no one knows about, why not give them a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.
