Starting a Business

It’s been difficult to get my business off the ground. I host trunk shows and offer the owner where I hold the show 10% of pre-tax sales as an incentive. It is shocking the number of business owners who won’t take me up on this offer. They view my forage into their domain as competition. I have a few steady customers who look forward to my booking a trunk show at their establishments because they know that their customer love the added bonus. After all, why not show your customers you care by offering something unique once in awhile.

According to the SBA about 2/3 or 66% of all businesses last the first two years that they are in business, this is a good statistic. It kind of debunks the old statistic that 50% of businesses fail their first year. The truth is 50% of businesses fail within their first five years. That’s not good. With these kinds of stats you would think a business owner would do whatever it takes to stay in business. The SBA also goes on to say that most businesses fail because they are not properly capitalized or actually go into business for the wrong reasons, their attentions are elsewhere. Don’t ask me what the right reasons are, since according to the SBA, businesses shouldn’t be focused on making money. Could have sworn this is why we go into business. I guess they are trying to tell us we should not rely upon making money the first few years in order to weather the hardship of entrepreneurship.

This brings me back to my business. I also do home trunk shows or jewelry parties. If anyone is interested in making 10% of pre-tax sales from a party that is hosted in their home, feel free to contact me. Many hostesses take this 10% incentive towards jewelry. It makes it a little easier on the budget when you get that great piece of jewelry at a 10% discount. But wait there’s more! The prices on our website do not reflect the additional discounts at trunk shows or jewelry parties. My theory is, if I’m going to pull all this jewelry out and set up in someone’s home or business I want to make the prices as good as possible to encourage buying.

Okay, so this is a shameless plug, but in the business world we have to prop ourselves up. If we don’t do it, who will? Come to my website and browse around, you just might find something you’ll love to wear!
